Mildred M. Block

Mildred M. Block, 94, of Sumner, died Thursday, April 20, 2017, at Community Memorial Hospital in Sumner.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday, April 24th  at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour preceding services at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be made in her name to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mildred Margarete, daughter of George and Clara (Winning) Probst was born March 9, 1923, at home, rural Hawkeye, Iowa. She was baptized May 9, 1923, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church-Richfield and received her education in the rural Sumner Schools. On December 18, 1941, she was united in marriage with Lester Block. Mildred was confirmed December 7, 1943, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. The couple farmed for many years north of Sumner. They raised chickens and milked cows and Mildred was very active in the farming operation. She was a long time member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Following Lester’s death on March 24, 2013, Mildred remained at home until moving in to Sumner in the summer. Mildred enjoyed traveling, the couple spent the winter’s in Arizona and enjoyed going to Canada on fishing trips, gardening, was a great cook (her grandchildren loved her cinnamon rolls and apple pies), but most especially enjoyed time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Mildred is survived by two sons, Wayne (Beverly) Block of Oelwein and Dennis (Rheta) Block of Sumner; seven grandchildren, Mike (Becky) Block of Calamus, Brad (Misty) Block of Cedar Falls, Randy (Linda) Block of Tripoli, Dan (Vicky) Block of Sumner, Tina (Mark) Hageman of Ft. Atkinson, Jeremiah (Tara) Fink of Sumner, and Nathan (Danielle) Fink of Oran; thirteen great grandchildren, Hailey, Jackson, Annaliese, Anderson, Piper, Brady, Blake, Dalton, Morgan, Dylan, Megan, Britney, and Raydyn.

In addition to her parents, and husband, Lester, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sharon Kay; four sisters, Leona Lee, Mable Masterson, Violet Probst, and Hazel Kane; and one foster brother, Max Wieher.
